Fire up the grill for a better barbecue

There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned cookout with lots of great food. And there’s no reason it can’t be both mouthwateringly delicious and perfectly healthy. Next time you have everybody over, follow these tips to bring balance to your barbecue.

Sides

Fresh fruit and crisp salads strike a nice balance with grilled meats. Many vegetables taste great when they’re cooked on the grill, so save room on your plate for bell peppers, zucchini, squash, onions, asparagus, mushrooms and more.

Mains

Hot dogs and burgers may be typical cookout fare, but don’t be afraid to give other proteins a try — like salmon or chicken breast.

Sauces

Switching up your go-to sauces for some lighter options — such as no-sugar ketchup, light mayo, low-sugar BBQ sauce and Greek yogurt ranch — is an easy way to eat better without sacrificing flavor.

Drinks

When you spend time outdoors, it’s important to stay hydrated. Plain water is the best way to reinvigorate your body and quench your thirst, but if you find yourself reaching for a soda, swap it out for sparkling water instead.
